The Hebrew Academy for Special Children is a New York State provider of Early Intervention Services under contract with the NYC Department of Mental Health and Hygiene for Queens and Brooklyn as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, and Sullivan counties. There are no out of pocket costs to the family. EI may access your health insurance to pay for some of the services without affecting your family's benefits.

Early diagnosis and treatment are important in improving children's competence and confidence in all areas of development. The sooner the children's developmental delays are treated, the more likely they'll be able to enter mainstream educational programs. Services are provided, all 12 months of the year, to eligible children. Home and Center based Services available include: Special Education, Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapies, Psychological Services, Parent Workshops and Service Coordination. Center based Services: half day program (morning or afternoon), small groups, air conditioned classrooms, free transportation, Cholov Yisroel meals and snacks, adaptive computer use, and assistive technology.

Early Intervention Program is available at the 55th street-Boro Park, Remsen-Brooklyn,and Woodmere-Nassau County Locations.

The first step is to evaluate children's development in the five basic areas. Evaluations and services can be provided at the child's home, day care setting or at one of our centers. (Only state approved evaluators under contract with the county can determine eligibility.)

The second step is treatment. If a child is found eligible for Early Intervention (EI), the family works with the evaluators and the county to identify the appropriate treatment services. Services must be authorized and arranged by the county.

The county will arrange for service providers, considering the individual needs of the child and family, to deliver services authorized by the county.

Families are responsible for any costs associated with child care or private community-based settings in which the child may be enrolled.

For additional information, please contact Hebrew Academy for Special Children. For referrals regarding the Early Intervention Program, you can contact your local municipality (see below).
